KitKat Chocolatory *Honest* Review: The Good, The Weird, The Tasty

Are you in love with the cocoa? If you are, it’s impossible you haven’t caught wind of KitKat’s latest holy grail in Malaysia – the KitKat Chocolatory. The chocolatory may have been introduced in Japan and Australia, but Malaysia's chocolatory is the only one in the world that offers a bespoke experience. The new concept store was launched at Mid Valley Megamall last Saturday and was officiated by Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Raja Muda Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Al-Haj.

The chocolatory gives customers a very personalised experience by letting them customise their KitKat to their hearts’ desires. You can start off by choosing your chocolate base – milk chocolate, white chocolate, or dark chocolate – before selecting three premium ingredients from a total of 16 ingredients to complete your creation. The range of premium ingredients available are quite festive – from chili flakes and senchia kikusui green tea leaves to a unique selection of nuts. To further elevate the personalised experience, you can even put your name and picture on the box along with a variety of patterns to help ward off your pesky siblings or colleagues from stealing your chocolate.

Each personalised box is priced at RM22.90 and comes with a total of eight wafers that are generously laden in your choice of chocolate and ingredients. Just a head’s up though, you’ll have to wait approximately one hour and 30 minutes for your personalised order to be completed. Expect some delays due to a surge in orders especially on weekends (we got ours two hours and 21 minutes after the order was placed). If you’re really impatient or in a rush, you can collect it the next day. However, take note that your custom creation is best consumed within five days.

Besides the made-to-order experience, you can skip the line and long waiting time by choosing from their range of ready-made KitKat Special Editions. The special edition is a range of unique KitKat flavours introduced every month and is sold exclusively only at the store. They come in four fingers and are priced at RM12.90 for each box.

You can get your hands on Café Latte, which is aimed at coffee enthusiasts; Banana Cluster Caramel, Orange, Pineapple, and Pecan, and many more. KitKat also tried to incorporate our local palette by coming up with flavours such as Nasi Lemak and Durian. If you’re in for a royal treat, there is a special edition flavour crafted by Tengku Amir named “Tengku Amir’s Jom Rileks Break” to celebrate the store’s opening. Another new flavour, “Deconstructed Ice Kacang”, will be introduced soon. The flavour is a collaboration between KitKat Chocolatory and local celebrity chef, Chef Anis Nabilah.

We at Rojak Daily were given the pleasure to sample five flavours from KitKat’s special edition range: “Tengku Amir’s Jom Relax Break”, “Nasi Lemak”, “Durian”, “Orange, Pineapple, and Pecan”, and “Café Latte with Cookies and Cream”. Those who were involved in this chocolate-taste test were our editors – Amresh and Lea, content producers – Azwa, Iylia, Marcus, and Rafaei, and our videographer – Juan. Here’s our honest review of the special edition range...

KitKat Nasi Lemak

The nasi lemak variation visually represents what a nasi lemak looks like, minus the anchovies and cucumber. It’s made of white chocolate, coconut shavings, peanuts, and chili flakes. When we first heard of a nasi lemak flavoured KitKat, we had some reservations about it. According to Azwa, “Chocolate tak patut buat flavour nasi lemak.”

We took a gamble and tried it. After all, there was nothing much to lose except it being either exceptionally great or bad. In all truthfulness, we deduced a unified verdict: it tasted nothing like an actual nasi lemak. The strong coconut flavour had a really distinctive flavour and the chili flakes left some sort of spicy aftertaste. Would we consider purchasing it in the future? Probably not. But if you’re into coconuts, then hey, this is definitely made for you.

KitKat Durian

The king-of-fruits-flavoured KitKat was an interesting one on our palates. It was weird, confusing, but had one of the most accurate representation of what’s being advertised. The biscuit wafer was covered in dark chocolate and chunks of dried durian – at least that’s what we think they are. The durian taste is very distinctive although not quite like what you would get from eating the actual fruit itself. Amresh reckoned that the dried durian tasted like the durian-flavoured snack we used to eat as kids.

As for Azwa, it tasted something akin to dodol durian, but leaves a weird aftertaste. Rafaei on the other hand, said this is “the taste of disappointment as a hardcore durian lover”. Weirdly though, Lea prefers this flavour out of the lot.

KitKat Café Latte with Cookies and Cream

To be honest, this one looks the most visually appeasing. That chocolate sauce on the side definitely sealed the deal for us and will convince even a chocolate hater to at least give it a try. If you have a blossoming relationship with coffee and a sweet tooth, this one’s right up your ally. For Marcus and Iylia, the white chocolate was too sweet and did not mix well with the bitterness of the coffee. As for Azwa and Juan, this one’s their favourite. It’s not that weird or bad, but it’s definitely staying true to their targeted audience: coffee lovers.

KitKat Orange, Pineapple, and Crunchy Pecan

The orange, pineapple, and crunchy pecan combination has a strong fragrant scent. The zesty combination of citrus fruits is really refreshing, despite the sweetness of the white chocolate. According to Juan, the pineapple bits tasted like jellybeans. We don’t really have much thought about it. We don’t hate it, but at the same time, it’s not something we’d try again. But, if you’re a fan of fruit-infused chocolates, you might want to give this a try.

Tengku Amir’s Jom Rileks Break KitKat

If you’d like a royal experience while eating a box of chocolate, this is it. Eight milk chocolate wafer sticks are lavishly made with a generous amount of apricots, oranges, sultanas, and almonds. The best part about it, it actually was an enjoyable experience and tastes good. The taste of oranges really stood out in this one, which was complimented by the sweet, velvety taste of milk chocolate. Lea and Iylia personally prefers this to the orange, pineapple and crunchy pecan variation but would prefer it better without the sultanas.

Overall, it was an interesting experience trying out these special edition chocolates. If you’re an avid fan of KitKat or have a knack of trying something new, we highly recommend the chocolatory to you. Your curiousity will definitely be rewarded and you can finally make your chocolatey dreams come true. The concept store is located at Mid Valley Megamall and operates every day from 10am to 10pm.
