Chaos Erupts As Fire Breaks Out At Mid Valley Megamall
On Tuesday night, a fire reportedly broke out at one of the most popular shopping malls in Klang Valley - Mid Valley Megamall.
According to eyewitnesses at the scene, smoke alarms went off around 8.15pm at the lower ground floor of the mall and shoppers started to panic after seeing smoke billowing in that area. Chaos then ensued and shoppers were left confused: A call was reportedly made to the Fire and Rescue Department at 8.24pm and they arrived shortly after. The fire was successfully put out at 8.52pm, according to a report by Malaysiakini.
Thankfully, no casualties were reported although an ambulance was deployed at the mall.
However, shoppers who witnessed the incident saw a lady passing out during the chaos as people scrambled to get her medical attention.
The lady was then reportedly sent to a nearby hospital for treatment.
There were no confirmation whether her condition was caused by the fire. Several news media outlets reported that the fire was caused by a malfunctioning fax machine on the third floor.
However, Mid Valley, in a statement posted on their Facebook page, said that the fire came from the plumbing stack room on the second floor of the mall and the authorities are still investigating the main cause.
According to The Star, the City Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre said that the fire started from a room storing PVC pipes and were filled with rubbish. A lit cigarette butt might have ignited the fire, but they are still investigating the cause. “We are also ensuring that there are no other substances that can cause a similar incident again,” a Bomba spokesman told the English daily.
Rojak Daily contacted the mall’s management for some clarification regarding the incident, but they declined to comment as the investigation is still ongoing.
Last year, a gas explosion took place at Mid Valley causing the ceilling of two restarants - Chilli's and McDonald's to collapse. The incident injured eight people.
