Participating in social media trends may seem like all fun and games, but not everything should be copied blindly.
An ongoing trend on social media shows several individuals posting photos or videos of themselves climbing and clinging to public infrastructure such as road signs and lamp posts.
It is understood that this activity is part of a TikTok trend called the ‘Maui Wowie’.

The trend began gaining popularity after some social media creators posted videos of themselves performing the challenge while lip-syncing to a song by Kid Cudi with the same name.
While it may seem like harmless fun, the act can actually result in a fine of up to RM1,500.

The Kuching City Council (DBKU) has described the trend as ‘immoral’ and ‘dangerous’.
“DBKU has taken note of a post on TikTok depicting three individuals climbing a road sign structure and a lamp post. DBKU views such actions seriously as they not only endanger personal safety but can also damage public property and tarnish the image of Kuching,” the statement reads.
DBKU reminded the public that such actions, including pasting any material on road signs without permission, constitute an offence under By-law 22(1)(b) of the Local Authorities (Cleanliness) By-laws, 1999.
If convicted, offenders can be fined up to RM1,500, with an additional fine of up to RM3,000 for subsequent offences or nine months’ imprisonment for each subsequent offence.
DBKU has also lodged a police report for further investigation under laws relating to public order following these actions.
