Proficiency in Bahasa Melayu is now a criterion for those planning to purchase land or own property on Malay Reserve Land and within Malay housing quotas in Selangor.
Selangor Chief Minister Datuk Seri Amirudin Shaari said this criterion helps determine whether an individual qualifies as Malay or Bumiputera, in addition to being Muslim and practising Malay customs.

“The criterion is important as the definition directly influences entitlement to ownership of Malay Reserve Land and Bumiputera lots, as well as participation in special housing and development quotas meant to uplift the community."
"The ability to speak and use Malay is a reflection of one's identity and belonging to the community,” he said, as reported by NST.
Amirudin also added that his administration referred to the Federal Constitution’s definition of a Malay when determining eligibility for land ownership and housing quotas.

Additionally, the Selangor government has committed to reinforcing the use of the national language in administration, development, and public spaces.
“We adhere to Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) guidelines. Road signs, business names, and place names must prioritise the Malay language, either in Rumi or Jawi script, to ensure uniformity and strengthen its position among residents.”
