If you regularly purchase and consume canned pork products, take note!

There are several brands of canned pork or pork-based products imported from countries affected by African Swine Fever (ASF) being sold in the market right now, and you should avoid buying them.

In fact, the state of Sarawak has temporarily banned such products.

New Straits Times, quoting a statement from the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS), reported that tests on 17 canned luncheon pork imported from China revealed that the DNA of ASF virus was detected in one of the samples.

According to the statement, the matter was confirmed by the department’s Veterinary Public Health during a laboratory test using Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (q-PCR).

Exercise caution when you buy, guys!
"So far, there is no African Swine Fever infection in pigs has been reported in the state. The detection of the virus does not change Sarawak ASF-free status.

“Sarawak state has enforced all pork and pork products import ban from ASF-infected country, including canned pork products from China until further notice,” the department said in the statement.

The department, together with other agencies, will be checking all supermarkets and remove affected products while products in shipment will undergo “hold-test-release” mechanism to ensure they are free from the virus.

Even though such measures are underway, we should still be cautious when buying the products, just to be on the safe side.
