The incident, said to have taken place at the National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) in Miri, quickly garnered the attention of Malaysians, many of whom urged authorities to take action over the alleged bullying.

Turns out, it was just a birthday prank

In a report by BERNAMA, after the video went viral, the ‘victim’ came forward and denied being bullied.

Miri Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the student, accompanied by his parents, went to the police station to clarify that the viral incident was actually a birthday prank carried out by his friends. His birthday had fallen on September 19.

Police have since summoned the institute’s officers, the parents, and all students involved — aged between 18 and 24 — to have their statements recorded to complete the investigation.

The case has been classified as No Further Action (NFA).

Meanwhile, in a Facebook post, MARA Chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki expressed disagreement with the outcome, stating that excessive pranks should still be considered a form of bullying.

“The incident at IKBN Miri has been reported as a birthday prank. I disagree with excessive pranks that can bring injury to others. Let’s not normalise bullying under the guise of a prank.”
