M’sian Woman Catches E-hailing Driver Watching a Video on His Phone While Driving

TLDR

  • A Grab passenger shared a video of a driver watching a video on his phone while driving, which resulted in dangerous and slow driving even on an empty road.
  • The passenger explained that she was afraid to confront the driver because she was worried he might leave her by the roadside, while netizens urged her to file an official report with Grab and the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
  • Grab Malaysia has responded, apologising for the incident and requesting the booking details in order to carry out an investigation and take appropriate action.

When you’re behind the wheel, there’s one simple rule that should never be broken: keep your eyes on the road. A split second of distraction can put lives at risk, whether it’s checking a phone notification or glancing at something other than the traffic ahead.

However, for one woman, what was supposed to be a normal e-hailing ride to work quickly turned unsettling after she realised her driver wasn’t fully focused on the road.

Instead, he was watching a video on his phone while navigating traffic.

In a post on Threads, the woman shared a clip showing her Grab driver glancing repeatedly at a video playing on his phone as he drove.

In the caption, she also wrote that the driver was moving unusually slowly on an empty road because he kept switching his attention between the video and driving.
Additionally, she claimed that the driver was aware she was recording him, yet continued doing so.

“By the way, his driving is really dangerous. He would swerve to change lanes at the last minute whenever he wanted to access the flyover so he could make a U-turn. A lorry driver honked at him for a long time. Mind you, there were lorries in front of and behind us, but he chose to drive recklessly,” she wrote.

Needless to say, other social media users were uneasy with how careless the driver was. Many urged the woman to lodge an official report with Grab and file a complaint with the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

“Just report it to Grab. At least in the future, these kinds of problematic drivers won’t be on the road.”

Meanwhile, some users questioned why the woman did not confront the driver on the spot. She has since replied, explaining that she was afraid he might leave her on the side of the road.

Grab investigating the driver

The woman’s post has since caught the attention of Grab Malaysia, who responded publicly on Threads. In their statement, the company apologised for what happened and emphasised that safety remains their top priority.

“Safety is our priority, and drivers are not allowed to use their phones to watch videos while driving. This should not have happened."

The company also urged the passenger to provide her booking ID via direct message so they could launch a proper investigation and take appropriate action.
