“This is my duty, my devotion” – S'porean Man Carries Disabled Brother to Attend Thaipusam Every Year
While other devotees carry kavadi during Thaipusam as a form of devotion, but for one, Singaporean man decides to show his own devotion in a more personal form.
Every year during Thaipusam, Suresh Vanaz, 46, would carry his younger brother to Batu Caves as part of a spiritual offering.

His brother, Gunaseelan, 41, has Cerebral Palsy after he had a high fever and a seizure when he was three years old.
Despite the hardship in taking care of him, Suresh said Gunaseelan had given him a purpose in shaping his own connection to God.
“This is my duty, my devotion. Caring for him, ensuring his happiness and well-being, that is my offering,” said Suresh.

This year, the brothers were initially supposed to celebrate Thaipusam by visiting Batu Caves but had to change their plans due to logistical challenges.
Aside from caring for his brother, Suresh sees his role as giving Gunaseelan a life filled with experiences and joy.
He added, “My brother's dream is to travel around the world. He wants to go to Phuket, Europe and other places. I want to give him the best life could offer. I hope God is kind to me, granting me the great fortune and blessing to bring him along and show him the world.”
