With all the things that are happening in the country (and the world) right now, we are in dire need of some good news.

And local diver Pandelela Rinong just gave us one.

History-making feat

The two-time Olympic medallist made the country proud by winning a gold medal at the Diving World Cup on Wednesday (5 May), New Straits Times reported.

In the process, the 28-year-old made history by bringing home the country's first ever gold medal at the competition, which was held at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.

Pandelela had a really good showing in the women's 10m platform individual event, amassing a strong 355.70 total to beat out the competition.

She placed fourth after the opening dive, with a score of 67.50m before taking the lead with a score of 75.40 in her next attempt.

She then achieved a score of 68.80 in her final dive to secure the victory.

Matsuri Arai of Japan finished second with a score of 342.00, while Canada's Caeli McKay won the bronze medal with a 338.55 total.

It was a sweet victory for Pandelela as she only won the bronze medal in the 2018 edition. In her first Diving World Cup outing in 2016, she managed to snag a silver medal.

Pandelela will return to the Tokyo Aquatics Centre for her fourth Olympics campaign in July, and judging by yesterday's performance, we have a strong feeling she will return with a medal.

Congratulations on your win, Pandelela Rinong!
