Remember the days of illegal VCDs and DVDs?

Well, just when we thought those days are over, the authorities would now have to deal with pirates plying their trade online.

Cracking down

Astro Awani reported that the National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) is currently conducting an investigation into the sale of pirated local films on e-commerce platforms.

This came after pirated versions of local movies such as 'Keluarga Iskandar The Movie' and 'Ada Apa Dengan Dosa' were found to have been sold on Shopee without the producer's permission.

Ahmad Idham Nadzri, the Chief Executive Officer of FINAS, told the news portal that his team will be cracking down on those who sell pirated films on e-commerce sites.

Pirates are selling local films on e-commerce platforms.
"We will investigate two parties, namely e-commerce and those who sell the films.

"Our investigation is to determine whether they own a distribution license and whether they have obtained permission from the producers to sell the films.

"Based on the reports we received, they did not get permission from the producers to sell the films," he was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Shopee has confirmed that they will be working closely with the authorities to crack down on the illegal sale of pirated movies.
