Sinkholes Emerge in Penang’s Persiaran Gurney and Near KLIA’s VIP Complex
Less than a month after the tragic sinkhole incident that claimed the life of an Indian woman, more sinkholes have appeared all over the nation.
Recently, a sinkhole had opened up on Persiaran Gurney, believed to have occurred after a lorry ferrying a load of bricks went through the stretch of the road where a sewage pipe alignment project using the "jacking" pipe method had been carried out by the contractor of the Gurney Bay project.
Repair work was carried out following the incident. According to BERNAMA, State Local Government Committee chairman Jason H'ng Mooi Lye said, "It is believed that there was a leak in the sewage pipe or that the installation process was not completed properly.”

Meanwhile, the Works Ministry reported that yesterday (September 25), a sinkhole estimated to be 5m wide and a metre deep appeared near the entrance to KLIA's Bunga Raya Complex.
In a statement, the ministry said the incident occurred between the entrance and exit of the Bunga Raya Complex, used by VIP guests and dignitaries when they fly off or arrive at KLIA.
"The road remains accessible to all vehicles. However, a traffic management plan has been implemented in the sinkhole area," read the statement.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is currently investigating a sewage pipe that is suspected to be leaking and to determine whether this could be the cause of the sinkhole, said the Works Ministry.
A detailed report will be issued by MAHB after the investigation is completed.
