What was supposed to be a moment of celebration for two young parents turned into a concerning situation when their newborn baby girl was allegedly swapped with a baby boy.

In a report by Harian Metro, the alleged incident took place at Tunku Azizah Hospital (HTA). According to the husband, Muhammad Harraz Haziq, 24, his wife gave birth to a baby girl on 7 April. The newborn was then sent to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Muhammad Harraz said his daughter was supposed to be discharged on 8 April. However, due to jaundice, the baby had to be warded.

“On the night of 8 April, a nurse came to take my baby for a blood test. Then, at 5 AM the next day, a nurse returned the baby and placed her in the incubator.”

However, an hour later, his wife began noticing something different about their baby. The couple was shocked to find that the baby returned to them was not their daughter, instead, it was a baby boy.

Both babies were wearing a tag with his wife’s name

Upon realising the issue, Muhammad Harraz quickly questioned the nurse in charge. However, according to him, the ward staff seemed doubtful of his claims and even questioned whether he was sure his wife had given birth to a baby girl.

“They questioned me, asking if I was sure my child was a girl. Luckily, I had taken a photo of the birth confirmation form as proof.”

Muhammad Harraz added that thankfully, his daughter was located later that same day (9 April). Nonetheless, he questioned how both babies were wearing tags with his wife’s name, which led to the confusion.

Despite finding his daughter, Muhammad Harraz viewed the incident as serious negligence by the hospital. When he tried to get an explanation, he claimed the staff seemed to be avoiding him.

On top of that, his attempt to contact the doctor in charge also reached a dead end.

Frustrated by the lack of explanation, a police report was lodged on 10 April. Muhammad Harraz said he hoped that a similar incident would not happen to other parents.

An internal investigation is underway

In an update, HTA Director Dr Shamsul Anuar Kamarudin stated that the incident has been resolved, with both babies safely returned to their respective mothers.

He added that the hospital had provided the necessary explanation and support to the families involved. Preliminary checks also found no breastfeeding or medical procedures that compromised the babies’ safety during the incident.

“HTA understands the public concern after the incident was shared on social media. The hospital has taken immediate action in accordance with established procedures while ensuring the safety and welfare of the babies remain the top priority,” he said, as reported by NST.

It is understood that an internal investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the incident and improve existing procedures to prevent a recurrence.
