Did You Know Fresh Flowers Are Banned in Hospital Chemotherapy Wards? Here’s What You Need to Know

While fresh flowers are a common gift for hospital visits, did you know that not all wards allow them?

You might wonder: Why does such a ban even exist? According to IKN, the restriction is in place to protect chemotherapy patients from infections, as their immune systems are weakened during treatment.

Here’s a deeper explanation of why fresh flowers are not permitted in chemotherapy wards:

Fresh flowers can increase the risk of infection & allergies

While they look beautiful, fresh flowers can harbour microorganisms and pests that are invisible to the naked eye.

Although healthy individuals may not be affected by these bacteria or small insects, cancer patients with compromised immunity can develop serious infections even from minor exposure.

Additionally, flowers contain pollen, which can trigger allergic reactions or even asthma attacks.

Sensory issues

Cancer patients often experience heightened sensitivity or altered sense of smell during treatment. Floral fragrances, even from mildly scented flowers, can cause discomfort or nausea.

So, what should you bring instead?

You can still gift flowers, but opt for artificial ones. Make sure they are unscented and free from sprayed perfumes.

Other thoughtful alternatives include light snacks like fruits or reading materials. However, always check with the hospital to ensure your gifts are allowed and won’t cause discomfort to the patient.
