House renting is a very common practice around the world. While many of us are fortunate to have kind landlords, not everyone is so lucky.

Recently, a Malaysian woman took to Xiaohongshu to share her nightmare rental experience, claiming that her landlord monitored everything she and her housemates did using CCTV installed inside their rental unit.

“I rented the place for four months, and it was such a bad experience. The landlord mentioned that she had installed a CCTV in the hall area, which was already a red flag. But since I needed to rent quickly, I accepted it.”

According to her, the landlord would watch them through the CCTV as they ate, cooked, and cleaned, and would constantly message them whenever she noticed something even slightly amiss.

“Once, the landlord even complained that the laundry we did exceeded the washing machine’s 7kg limit after it absorbed water. She said it could ‘damage the machine’.”

The woman said that after this incident, the landlord imposed strict rules for using the washing machine, stating that the maximum capacity should be only 30 T-shirts per wash.

As if that wasn’t enough, the woman also claimed that the landlord would remotely switch off the lights if she thought they were wasting electricity, and would frequently send messages reminding them to turn off the lights.

According to the woman, the landlord later admitted that she constantly watched the CCTV, leaving her and her housemates feeling like they had no privacy at all.

She shared her experience in hopes of warning others to thoroughly check their rental units before signing any agreements to avoid similar situations.
