This Kuantan Stall Sells Durians by the Sack for RM100 as Malaysia Faces Oversupply Problem

Durian season can be both exciting and dangerous for the wallet. One moment you're telling yourself you'll only buy a couple of fruits, and the next, you're walking away with far more than you planned.

Now imagine being offered an entire sack of durians for RM100. Sounds too good to be true, right? But that is exactly what's happening at a durian stall in Kuantan, Pahang.

In videos posted on social media, customers can be seen carrying sacks overflowing with durians out of the stall. In some clips, customers appeared to struggle with carrying the towering stacks of fruit to their cars, often requiring help from another person.

Two options of sacks

According to an explanatory video shared by a staff member, customers can choose between two sack options: the Sogo sack and the Pavilion sack. While both are priced at RM100, each contains different types of durian.

Those who opt for the Pavilion sack can fill it with premium durian varieties such as Musang King, Udang Merah and IOI. However, customers are not allowed to overfill the sack beyond its designated capacity.

Meanwhile, the Sogo sack comes with a different rule. Customers can fill it with as many durians as they can fit inside, provided they can carry the sack back to their vehicle. The catch? This option contains a random assortment of durian varieties rather than specific premium varieties.

The stall, known as Durian Sultan 916, operates daily from 4 PM to 2 AM.

Malaysia is currently facing a durian oversupply

Given the sheer amount of durians some customers managed to fit into their sacks, some may wonder about the economics behind the promotion and whether the stall is earning much revenue at all.

It turns out that this durian stall in Kuantan is not the only one offering massive promotions on the king of fruits.

Malaysia is currently experiencing a durian oversupply as the fruit enters its peak harvest season. While this may sound great for durian lovers, it has also led to a sharp decline in prices.

According to NST, the price of Musang King durian fell from around RM90 per kg to as low as RM9 per kg as of Wednesday.

Other varieties, such as Black Thorn, have also reportedly experienced a similar drop in price.

While the situation has benefited Malaysians by making premium durians more affordable, some traders have voiced concerns about the slump, as profit margins have been significantly reduced.
