Malaysians, take note!

After years of construction, the new Light Rail Transit Line 3 (LRT3) began service today. The 37.8 km line features 20 stations across Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam and Klang, with two interchange stations at Bandar Utama (MRT Kajang Line) and Glenmarie (LRT Kelana Jaya Line).

To commemorate the event, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that commuters can ride the newly launched LRT3 free of charge for one month starting today (29 June).

“From 29 June to 31 July, fares on the LRT3 Shah Alam Line and its feeder bus services along the Shah Alam route will be free of charge,” he said, as reported by Malay Mail.

It is understood that the decision was made following discussions between the Transport Ministry and the Finance Ministry. Despite acknowledging that the free rides would incur additional costs, the government believes the long-term benefits outweigh the expenses.

Anwar also said that Transport Minister Anthony Loke had advocated for the initiative so that more people could benefit from the new rail line.

For information, the LRT3 is the fourth fully automated and driverless rail system in the Klang Valley, following the Kelana Jaya Line, Kajang Line and Putrajaya Line.
