Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) will be held accountable for the recent incident of high charges of electricity bills, which was said to be because of a technical glitch, and other violations.

Soya Cincau reported that Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Yoe Bee Yin had said that TNB failed to meet the service performance standards stipulated by the ministry.

Therefore, TNB will have to pay a penalty to the Energy Commission, under whose purview the energy company is, but the amount is not set yet.

End of last month (May), many Malaysians noticed an increase of up to 200 percent in their electricity bills and took to social media and official channels to report the incident.

The Star reported that TNB received about 18,000 reports of high electricity bills in April and May, but have resolved 80 percent of the cases as of 14 June.

According to the report, refund will be credited to complainants' accounts once the investigations are completed.
