Raise your hands if you can't identify more than a handful of fishes. We sure can't.

Despite loving seafood including different types of fishes as well as that they are important to the ecosystem, most of us know very little about them.

Not Jeremy Wade, though. The British television presenter, author, freshwater detective and biologist has spent decades getting up close and personal with fishes.

In his latest documentary 'Unknown Waters With Jeremy Wade', viewers can learn more about specific fishes and the environment they live in.

A portrait of fish and its habitat

Bull Sharks are rarely found in freshwater
Wade said that 'Unknown Waters With Jeremy Wade' was built on what his team has been doing for the last 10 years or so with "River Monsters", " Mighty Rivers", and "Dark Waters".

If you've watched any of those shows, you'd know that the makers the underwater world very interesting.

"The easiest way to describe them is, each one, in a way, is a portrait of a of a fish," Wade said adding that the show looks very closely at a fish.

"I think a lot of people, particularly (when it comes to) river fish...because we don't we don't see them very often, when we think about fish we think of a sort of like a children's drawing. It's very generic but when you look closely, fish are all different and those differences reflect in the way that they look," he said.

Wade likened the difference to an aircraft where it may all look the same to most but when one look closely, one realises that there are different types of planes - freight, passenger and others.

He added that the show also becomes a portrait of the place the fish is found.

"Why does it live in this place, but not in that place. So, each program is also a portrait of a place. It's looking at a particular place from the point of view of a fish," he said.

The show focuses on three types of fishes - Bull Shark in Amazon, Atlantic Salmon in Iceland and Nile Perch from the Rift Valley lakes in Africa so viewers don't only get to know a lot more of the fish species, but also the area they live in as well as how environment impacts the species and vice versa.
