Yes, you read that right: sago worm sushi. Instead of the usual sushi delights we are accustomed to such as salmon or fish roe, a Japanese restaurant chain in Sarawak named Sushi Tie has a bizarre new item on its menu.

Sago worms are more commonly known as ulat sagu and the restaurant claims its sushi to be the first of its kind in Sarawak. Sago worms eaten on its own have been long enjoyed by the indigenous people of Sabah and Sarawak. The worms are said to have a creamy taste and apparently even tastes rather meaty, like a mix of chicken and bacon (although we have not been brave enough to test this out for ourselves).

Sago worms are known to have numerous health benefits as it is a rich source of protein and dietary fiber. They are even rich in minerals such as calcium and magnesium, which helps to strengthen our bones and teeth.

Fried grasshoppers have also been a traditional snack in Kelantan amongst farmers for many generations, but Sushi Tie has upped the ante on insect snacks.

This dish isn’t one for the faint hearted although the restaurant promises that it won’t ‘climb out from your bowl’ as it is served fried rather than live.

Those who are brave enough to take on the challenge to sample this quirky delicacy will be rewarded with a RM20 cash voucher. The restaurant also highlights the fact that the sushi contains collagen which is known to slow down the aging process. Personally, we aren’t sure if all those perks will be enough for us to feast on this.
