Being caught out in a rain sucks, especially when you're parked in an open air carpark and you do not have an umbrella with you.

But imagine that the rain falls only on your car. Oh, you think that's impossible? Read on.

A strange phenomenon

A video showing a single car being drenched by rainfall while other cars in a carpark remain dry has gone viral on social media and subsequently left netizens feeling puzzled.

According to Kompas, the strange (but true) phenomenon was captured by Uryan Riana from Indonesia, who saw it with his very own eyes before he quickly whipped out his phone to take a video.

Uryan told the news portal that he spotted the odd event in a parking lot in Bekasi Regency in West Java on 1 November.

At first, Uryan thought that someone was spraying down water from one of the hotel rooms above him.

“But when I looked up, the water was actually falling from the sky, and it was raining,” he was quoted as saying.

He added that when he approached the car, he didn’t see anyone spraying water from a distance either, so he quickly took out his phone to record a video in a classic case of 'pics or didn't happen'.

"Hopefully, this is a sign of good things to come in the days ahead," he said.

Here's the video:

We reckon the owner of the car should immediately buy a lottery ticket, don't you think?

Possible explanation

Before you blame aliens for this phenomenon, do note that although rare, such occurence can happen.

The experts call the phenomenon ‘ultra-localised rain’, and a similar incident was captured on video on a street in Italy back in 2016.

As for Uryan's case, the country's Metereology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BKMG) said that while such a phenomenon is possible, the incident in the video was more likely improbable.

"The possibility of it happening is very small.

"This is because the diameter of a cumulonimbus cloud (rain-producing cloud) generally stretches to dozens or hundreds of kilometers,” the agency’s spokeswoman, Dwi Rini Endra Sari, was quoted as saying.

Dwi also explained that even if such an incident happened, it should have been accompanied by lighter rainfall in the surrounding vicinity.

Well, whatever the cause may be, let's just hope the owner of the vehicle brought an umbrella with him that day.
