Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur has announced that the ‘Sambutan Ambang Merdeka’ has been cancelled. It was initially scheduled at Dataran Merdeka on 30 August, the eve of our National Day.

A social media post read, “This cancellation is in respect of the victims of several incidents which have occurred around Kuala Lumpur city centre lately.” Celebrities such as Aina Abdul, Mawi, and Hijjaz were scheduled to perform at the event.

However, the Merdeka Day parade on 31 August at Putrajaya will still go on as scheduled.

The search goes on

Meanwhile, NST has reported that the search and rescue (SAR)  attempt for the Indian tourist who fell into a sinkhole in Jalan Masjid India on 23 August (Friday) is still unsuccessful. The 48-year-old woman from Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, India, named Vijayaletchumy, fell into an 8m deep hole, and the SAR operations now enter the seventh day.

Earlier this morning (29 August), two firemen in wet suits and full-enclosure diving helmets entered a sewage tunnel to search for the woman. The decision to go in was made yesterday. This was after the SAR department detected an obstacle between the clear soil and the second sewer, located approximately 80m away. Two Detection Unit (K9) dogs made the findings, in addition to camera surveillance equipment.

The two men entered the hole at 3:06 am, but they were pulled out less than half an hour later by their team members. Due to strong currents in the tunnel, the divers could not get close to where the object was believed to have been located.

Following the latest development, water and sewage were pumped out of the hole late last night.

We pray that the woman will be found soon.
