Masks have become an essential item these days.

As such, we have seen many types of masks being introduced in the market using different kinds of materials.

However, we are pretty sure that you’ve never heard of edible masks.

The edible masks idea came from three students who like Japanese melon bread or melon pan.

Yummy

For those of you that don't know, a melonpan is a type of sweet bun which is popular in Japan, Taiwan and China.

The buns are made from an enriched dough covered in a thin layer of crisp cookie dough.

A face mask that tastes good

According to a report by Mashable SEA, the trio wanted to smell the bread all day long, an idea which inspired the creation of the edible mask called ‘Mask Pan’.

It protects you and you can eat it.

The trio got the help of an experimental laboratory, helmed by Goku no Kimochi The Labo, to develop the first edible face mask.

While the mask may sound flimsy, you’d be surprised to know that it passed the effectiveness tests of the Unitika Garmentec Research Institute with flying colours.

In fact, the report said the edible mask even has a superior level of protection and likened it to commercial face masks.

In Japan, ‘Mask Pan’ is sold for 1,800 yen (RM68) for five pieces.

Of course, we hope people are not using it and then actually eating it.

It's probably biodegradable though and that's cool!
