Adorably cute but critically endangered, there is much that still needs to be done — conservation wise — when it comes to pangolins.

Good news, however, the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) recently announced the birth of two baby pangolins under their care.

Named Corona and Corina, the two cuties are the first pangolins to ever be born in captivitity in Malaysia.

Corona, weighing 150g and measuring 29cm, was born on 6 May.

Corina, on the other hand, weighs 140g and is 26cm long. She was born on 11 May.

The mother pangolins Tara and Pidang are doing well too.

Proud mamas.

A rareoccurrence

In a post on Facebook, officials from Perhilitan explained that the births were something to be proud of as it is extremely challenging to breed pangolins in captivity.

"Pangolins are an endangered species and this the first conservation program for them," Perhilitan said.

According to National Geograhic, thousands of these shy mammals are poached every year.

They are killed for their scales which are erroneously believed to have medicinal properties and is even enjoyed as a delicacy in China and Vietnam.

We hope both Corona and Corina will grow up and start their own families.
