Having green fingers has earned a housewife in Perak the state government’s recognition in conjunction with Merdeka.

SH Chin’s hard work planting vegetables in a small plot in front of her house in Pasir Pinji is the reason behind the recognition.



According to a report in Malay Mail, the 73-year-old who grew up with a family of farmers and started working on the empty plot of land about five years ago.

“At that time, weeds were overgrown and it created health problems for the community.”

“I then took it upon myself to work on the land and planted vegetables,” she said.

Keeping it green

Among the vegetables in the vegetable plot include chilli, Chinese broccoli, ladies fingers and winged beans.

She said the landowner was in the know about her gardening activities on his property, but he did not mind as she keeps the compound clean.

For her efforts, the Ipoh City Council gave her a hoe and some fertiliser.

State Housing, Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Nolee Ashilin Mohammed Radzi is all for using empty plots to start gardens.

“If they find vacant land in their area, they can refer to their local authority to find out its status. If there is no ownership and the council does not object, they can then work on it.”
