The incident was detailed in a post by Facebook user Yashwend, who mentioned that the son of his friend who was Sikh faced the discriminatory hiring practices of 99 Speedmart.

99 Speedmart discrimination

The manager was not present for the interview, however, a staff conducted the interview. They agreed to give the young boy the job but on the condition that the boy needed to cut his hair and shave his beard.

According to Sikh Coalition, "Initiated Sikhs are not supposed to cut hair from any part of their body. All Sikhs, men and women are thus supposed to have unshorn (uncut) hair and remain unshaved."

The mother of the boy then confronted the manager of the 99 Speedmart and wanted to confirm if he had requested the boy's hair and beard be cut.

To this, the staff replied that it's their SOP to maintain short hair and shaved beard. The person then apologised and said that they would not be able to hire the boy since he cannot cut his hair and shave his beard.

It is unknown at this time if it was really company SOP or if it was a one-off policy by that particular 99 Speedmart. We couldn't find any comments on the original post about hiring policies at 99 Speedmart but found this comment in the Facebook group Rejected Malaysian Memes:

At the time of writing, 99 Speedmart has not yet addressed the issue.
