61-year-old’s Traditional Malay Inang Dance Video Goes Viral
Displaying the muhibbah spirit in the most graceful manner.
61-year-old Koo Soo Ming stole the hearts of Malaysian netizens when she posted a video of her performing the traditional Malay Inang dance.
The Inang is a modern version of the traditional Mak Inang dance, which was initially performed by court ladies during the time of the Malacca Sultanate.
According to a report in mStar, Koo posted the video as part of the #InangChallenge, and it was later shared by dance choreographer Kerol Mohtar.
A social media acquaintance
When contacted, Kerol revealed that he had had never met Koo in person.
“We only interacted on social media and Whatsapp. She is my follower on YouTube. Last month, she asked me about a song. She also asked me to teach her how to dance."
“She said that she was interested in Malay traditional dance and that she sees positive values in such dances,” he told mStar.
He added that he shared the video because Koo’s talent impressed him.
Meanwhile, Koo said she learnt the dance in just one day.
“I practised only for one day, but I watched the Inang dance videos for a few days because I wanted to familiarise myself with the steps."
“I have been a big fan of traditional Malay dance since I was young. I also liked to watch Malay films and listen to Malay songs, ” she said.
