Malaysian netizens have earned widespread admiration from Indonesians for their compassionate response during the recent demonstrations. In a spontaneous show of solidarity, many Malaysians used food delivery apps to send meals to affected individuals in Indonesian cities.

Social media lit up with heartfelt messages of gratitude, as Indonesians shared how the gesture moved them to tears and prompted prayers for blessings upon their Malaysian neighbours.

One Malaysian shared his experience of ordering food worth 100,000 rupiah, selecting Surabaya as the delivery location and mosque lobbies as the drop-off points. He even included instructions for delivery riders to enjoy the meals themselves.

Meanwhile, several Indonesian Grab riders have shared their experiences of receiving orders from Malaysians. One rider mentioned receiving orders with requests to share the food with strangers.

"This is a form of support shown by Malaysians towards us. We hope that Indonesia becomes peaceful once again," he said.

Protests in Jakarta began last week as a form of opposition to government policies, including the controversial increase in housing allowances for Members of Parliament, which reached 50 million rupiah (approximately RM13,000) per month.

Other policies seen as burdensome such as rising living costs, the withdrawal of certain subsidies, mass layoffs, and high property taxes, also fueled public anger.

The demonstrations later spread to other cities and became more aggressive following the death of Ojek rider Affan Kurniawan, who was struck by a police vehicle during a protest in Jakarta.

So far, the large-scale protests have resulted in six fatalities.
